4. Reading and pronunciation – Exercises 1 – 11

٤) النُّطْقُ وَالْقِرَاءَةُ – تَمَارِينُ 1 – 11

The following exercises focus on the correct spelling and pronunciation of Arabic sounds following the methodological principle of listening → speaking → reading → writing.

As it takes time to master reading and writing the Arabic script, we start with listening and speaking exercises about words, objects and people from your surroundings and daily life.
Following this method, learners memorize the correct stress of the words without studying rules. Despite methodological doubts, the transliteration of the new words was included because these exercises have to be repeated at home. Adding the English transliteration enables the learner to check when reading at home.
In the following reading exercises, the instructor first explains the new words and then writes them on the board using the vowel signs. He clearly articulates the words and has the students repeat them. The instructor checks, corrects and explains the pronunciation enabling the students to understand the meaning intuitively by gesturing or pointing at the objects.
Then the instructor encourages students to read aloud individually. Both the middle and left column with the translation and transliteration should be covered. From time to time, the instructor asks about the meaning and translation of the words.

٢ إقرؤوا.

أَنَا طَالِب.	I am a student.	anā ṭālib.
أَنَا طَالِبَة.	I am a student (f.).	anā ṭāliba.
أَنْتَ مُعَلِّم.	You are a teacher.	anta mu‛allim.
أَنْتِ مُعَلِّمَة.	You are a teacher (f.).	anti mu‛allima.
أَنَا مُسْلِم.	I am a Muslim.	anā muslim.
أَنَا مُسْلِمَة.	I am a Muslim (f.).	anā muslima.
هُوَ مُسْلِم.	He is a Muslim.	huwa muslim.
هِيَ مُسْلِمَة.	She is a Muslim.	hiya muslima.
هُوَ طَالِب.	He is a student.	huwa ṭālib.

﴾بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ﴿

هِيَ طَالِبَة.	She is a student.	hiya ṭāliba.
أَنَا مُعَلِّم وَأَنْتَ طَالِب.	I am a teacher and you are a student.	anā mu‛allim wa-anta ṭālib.
أَنَا مُعَلِّم وَأَنْتِ طَالِبَة.	I am a teacher and you are a student (f.).	anā mu‛allim wa-anti ṭāliba.
هُوَ طَالِب وَأَنَا مُعَلِّم.	He is a student and I am a teacher.	huwa ṭālib wa-anā mu‛allim.
هِيَ طَالِبَة وَأَنَا مُعَلِّم.	She is a student and I am a teacher.	hiya ṭāliba wa-anā mu‛allim.
هِيَ طَالِبَة وَهُوَ طَالِب.	She is a student and he is a student.	hiya ṭāliba wa-huwa ṭālib.

٣ إقرؤوا.

هُنَا	here	hunā

هُنَا وَهُنَاكَ	here and there	hunā wa-hunāka
أَنَا هُنَا وَأَنْتَ هُنَاكَ.	I am here and you are there.	anā hunā wa-anta hunāka.

هُوَ هُنَا وَهِيَ هُنَاكَ.	He is here and she is there.	huwa hunā wa-hiya hunāka.
أَنْتَ هُنَا وَهُوَ هُنَاكَ.	You are here and he is there.	anta hunā wa-huwa hunāka.
هُنَا غُرْفَة.	Here is a room.	hunā ġurfa.
هُنَاكَ بَيْت.	There is a house.	hunāka bait.
هُنَا وَرَق.	Here is paper.	hunā waraq.
هُنَا قَلَم.	Here is a pen.	hunā qalam.
هُنَا كُرَّاسَة.	Here is a notebook.	hunā kurrāsa.
هُنَا كِتَاب.	Here is a book.	hunā kitāb.
هُنَا شَنْطَة.	Here is a bag.	hunā shanṭa.
هُنَا غُرْفَة وَهُنَاكَ بَيْت.	Here is a room and there is a house.	hunā ġurfa wa-hunāka bait.
هُنَا وَرَق وَهُنَاكَ قَلَم.	Here is paper and there is a pen.	hunā waraq wa-hunāka qalam
هُنَا كُرَّاسَة وَهُنَاكَ كِتَاب.	Here is a notebook and there is a book.	hunā kurrāsa wa-hunāka kitāb.
هُنَا كِتَاب وَهُنَاكَ شَنْطَة.	Here is a book and there is a bag.	hunā kitāb wa-hunāka shanṭa.

هُنَا مِصْبَاح.	Here is a lamp.	hunā miṣbāḥ.
هُنَا لَوْح.	Here is a blackboard.	hunā lauḥ.
هُنَا طَاوِلَة وَهُنَاكَ كُرْسِي.	Here is a table and there is a chair.	hunā ṭāwila wa-hunāka kursī.
هُنَا خِزَانَة وَهُنَاكَ مِصْبَاح.	Here is a cupboard and there is a lamp.	hunā khizāna wa-hunāka miṣbāḥ.
هُنَا خِزَانَة وَهُنَاكَ لَوْح.	Here is a cupboard and there is a blackboard.	hunā khizāna wa-hunāka lauḥ.
هُنَا بَاب.	Here is a door.	hunā bāb.
هُنَا شُبَّاك.	Here is a window.	hunā shubbāk.
هُنَا جِدَار.	Here is a wall.	hunā jidār.
هُنَا بَاب وَهُنَاكَ شُبَّاك.	Here is a door and there a is window.	hunā bāb wa-hunāka shubbāk.
هُنَا جِدَار وَهُنَاكَ بَاب.	Here is a wall and there is a door.	hunā jidār wa-hunāka bāb.

٥ إعادة التمارين ١-٤. يطلب المعلّم من كلّ طالب على حدة قراءة جملة معيّنة.

٦ إقرؤوا.

المعلّم:	أَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُم.	Peace be with you!
الطّالب:	وَعَلَيْكُمُ ﭐلسَّلَام.	Peace be with you!
المعلّم:	مَا هُنَا؟	What is here?
الطّالب:	هُنَا بَاب.	Here is a door.
المعلّم:	مَن هُنَا؟	Who is here?
الطّالب:	هُنَا مُعَلِّم.	Here is a teacher.
المعلّم:	مَا هُنَا وَمَا هُنَاكَ؟	What is here and what is there?
الطّالب:	هُنَا بَاب وَهُنَاكَ طَاوِلَة.	Here is a door and there is a table.
المعلّم:	مَن هُنَا وَمَن هُنَاكَ؟	Who is here and who is there?
الطّالب:	هُنَا طَالِب وَهُنَاكَ طَالِبَة.	Here is a student and there is a student (f.).

٧ إقرؤوا المفردات والجمل في التمارين ١-٤ مع إخفاء الترجمة والمعلّم يصحّح الأخطاء.

٩ إستمعوا إلى الجمل التالية وكرّروها.

مَا اسْـمُكَ؟	What is your name?	mā-smuka?
إِسْـمِي يَـحْيَـى.	My name is Yaḥyā.	ismī yaḥyā.
وَأَنْتِ، مَا اسْـمُكِ؟	And you, what is your name?	wa-anti, mā-smuki?
إِسْـمِي فَاطِمَة.	My name is Fāṭima.	ismī fāṭima.
مِنْ أَيْنَ أَنْتِ، يَا فَاطِمَة؟	Where are you from, Fatima?	min aina anti, yā fāṭima?
أَنَا مِن مِصْر.	I am from Egypt.	anā min miṣr.
وَمِنْ أَيْنَ أَنْتَ، يَا يَـحْيَـى؟	And where are you from, Yaḥyā?	wa-min aina anta, yā yaḥyā?
أَنَا مِنْ تُونِس.	I am from Tunisia.	anā min tūnis.
