1. Declension and tanwīn

١) إِعْرَابُ الْأَسْمَاءِ وَتَنْوِينُهَا

The declension of definite and indefinite nouns and adjectives indicates number, gender and case. Definite nouns have the following case endings:
Ḍamma for أَلرَّفْعُ (nominative), Kasra for أَلْجَرُّ (genitive) and Fatḥa for أَلنَّصْبُ (accusative).

Some nouns have only two case endings (↑Diptotes) and some other nouns have always the same ending: e.g. مَقْهًى / أَلْمَقْهَى café, pronounced: maqhan / al-maqhā.

If the noun is indefinite, an additional -n (Nūn) is pronounced after Ḍamma, Kasra and Fatḥa at the end of the word. This is called أَلتَّنْوِينُ (Nunation = adding the Nūn). In vocalized texts أَلتَّنْوِينُ is written by doubling the short vowel sign. Indefinite nouns in the accusative take an Alif at the end if they are not diptote (2. Diptotes) and do not end in ة :

Nouns and adjectives (singular and broken plural) have the following case endings:

Arabic texts are usually unvocalized and thus the vowel signs marking the case endings are omitted. In colloquial Arabic they are also omitted to a large extent. However, the endings are read in recitations (Quran, Hadith, classical poetry), Friday sermons, in the news and formal occasions except at the last word before a pause or at the end of the sentence:

هٰذَا بَيْتْ. هٰذِهِ غُرْفَة. هٰذَا بَيْتٌ كَبِيرْ. هٰذِهِ غُرْفَةٌ جَمِيلَة. هُنَاكَ مُعَلِّمُونْ. هُنَاكَ الْمُعَلِّمُونَ الْجُدُدْ.
