قواعد اور ذخیرۂ الفاظ کا انتخاب روزمرّہ استعمال اور کمیونیکیشن کی ضروریات کی بنیاد پر کیا گیا ہے- اسباق کے نصوص مختلف شعبوں سے لئے گئے ہیں مثلاً تاریخ، معاشرت،مذھب، سیاست،کھیل، سائنس اور ثقافت۔ یہ کورس غیر ضروری اور نایاب چیزیں پڑھانے کی بجائے کمیونیکیشن کی اساسیات سکھانے پر زور دیتا ہے-
کتاب طلبہ میں یہ صلاحیت ا پیدا کرے گی کہ وہ زبان کے استعمال کے بےشمارمواقع پر بھر پور مہارت کا اظہار کرسکیں- اسی لئے بول چال اور تحریری زبان میں کثرت سے استعمال ہونے والی عبارتوں پر خصوصی توجّہ دی گئی ہے بالخصوص وہ عبارتیں جو مبارکباد دینے، نیک خواہشات کا اظہار کرنے،تقریر کرنے، تعارف کروانے،جذبات کا اظہار کرنے اور معذرت کرنے کیلئے مروّج ہیں- ضرب الامثال اور محاوروں کے ساتھ ساتھ ثقافتی،مذہبی اورتاریخی معلومات بھی شامل کی گئی ہیں تاکہ زبان کی ثقافت سے بھی آگہی پیدا ہو-
پوری کتاب میں عربی کی عمومی لسانیاتی اصطلاحات کو اس غرض سے استعمال کیا گیا ہے تاکہ طلبہ دیگر کورسز سے استفادہ کر سکیں اور دنیائے عرب میں مزید کورسز میں داخلے کے اہل بن سکیں-
چونکہ معیاری عربی بول چال کی زبان نہیں رہی، کہ عرب اپنےاپنے لہجات سے متاثرہ زبان بولتے ہیں، اس لئے طلبہ کیلئے لازمی ہے کہ وہ لہجات میں کی جانے والی گفتگوسمجھنے کی بھر پور صلاحیت رکھتے ہوں- اس ضرورت کے پیشِ نظر کتاب میں لہجات کو سمونے کا نیا طریقہ اختیار کیا گیا ہے؛ چوتھے سبق سے تمام مکالمات کو معیاری زبان کے ساتھ ساتھ درج ذیل چار بڑے لہجات میں بھی ریکارڈ کیا گیا ہے:
ا– عراقی/ خلیجی / سعودی ب – شامی/ لبنانی/ فلسطینی ج – مصری د – مغربی
سبق کی اصل نص کو برقرار رکھتے ہوئے متعلّقہ لہجات کی چیدہ چیدہ خصوصیات کواس انداز سےشامل کیا گیا ہے کہ معنی ومفہوم کا اظہار مناسب طریقے سے ہو جس سے طلبہ بتدریج لہجات میں گفتگو اور مکالمات کو سمجھنا شروع کریں گے۔ تاہم اس کتاب کے اہداف میں یہ بات شامل نہیں کہ وہ لہجات مٰیں بول چال بھی کریں- اصل مقصد یہ ہے کہ طلبہ تعلیم یافتہ عربوں کے ہاں بولی والی زبان کے مختلف طریقوں میں اظہار ما فی الضمیر کر سکیں۔ اس کے بعد طلبہ اپنے میدانِ تخصّص یا جغرافیائی علاقے کا انتخاب کرکے کسی مخصوص لہجے میں گفتگو کا ملکہ حاصل کرسکتے ہیں۔
یورپ کے عمومی لسانی جانچ کے معیار کی رو سےیہ کتاب بارہویں سبق تک طلبہ کو درجہ الف-۲ (A1) کی مہارت بہم پہنچاتی ہے جبکہ مکمل چوبیس اسباق ختم کرنے سے طلبہ درجہ ب-۲ (B2) کی مہارت حاصل کرتےہیں- غیر ملکی زبانوں کی تدریس کی امریکن کونسل کے معیار کے مطابق طلبہ پہلے بارہ اسباق میں Novice High اور چوبیس اسباق میں Advanced High کی مہارت حاصل کرلیتے ہیں۔

Preface
The textbook is available both in the traditional print edition as well as the e-edition for laptops, netbooks and tablet PC’s. Depending on system requirements, the e- edition allows access to all audio files and exercises by clicking the mouse or touching the screen. Both publications are identical in their content and answer keys for all drills and exercises are available. Vocabulary and grammar are based on frequency analysis and communication requirements. The original texts were selected from various fields such as history, society, religion, politics, sports, science and culture. This course is not about teaching what is rare and unnecessary, but rather focuses the fundamental aspects of communication.
Students will learn how to master different situations of communication. Therefore special attention is given to repetitive and recurring expressions of both the written and spoken language, such as greetings, wishes, addresses, introductions, feelings, apologies as well as proverbs and stereotypical phrases. In addition, cultural, religious and historical information is conveyed in order to achieve cultural competence.
Common Arabic linguistic terminology is used throughout the book enabling students to enroll in language courses in the Arab world and exploit other Arabic language sources.
Since no one speaks Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) as their native language and communication is strongly influenced by local dialects, students must be proficient in comprehending expressions, phrases and entire conversations in the dialect. Thus, Contemporary Arabic follows a new approach of incorporating Arabic dialects. Starting with lesson 4 all conversational texts are recorded in MSA as well as the dialects of four main regions:
A. Iraq/Gulf/Arabian Peninsula B. Syria/Lebanon/Palestine C. Egypt D. Maghreb
While maintaining the original content, special features of the respective dialect are incorporated in order to express the content adequately. Gradually, students learn to follow conversations in the dialect. However, it is not intended that students will actively speak the dialect. The objective is for students to express themselves in a variant of Arabic that is close to the language of educated Arabic speakers or Educated Arabic (لُغَةُ الْمُثَقَّفِينَ). Once they know their area of specialization or preferred region it is easy to add one of the provided dialect variants to the training in MSA.
Using this book enables the student to reach Level A2 after finishing lesson 12 and Levels B2 after lesson 24 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This compares to Novice High and Advanced High according to the rating scale of the American Council of Teaching Foreign Languages (ACTFL).
